Croatia is becoming a more and more popular vacation destination every year. It wasn’t always on everyone’s lips when it came to summer destination ideas, but it’s becoming more renowned as one of the finest places on the planet to go for a fun, sun-filled, relaxing break.
Perhaps one of the reasons that Croatia has picked up in popularity is that it’s relatively cheap when compared to a lot of other classic summer vacations. While this is certainly true to an extent, Croatia shouldn’t just be seen as some budget version of more famous and elaborate locations. Croatia is an incredible place in its own right – and this quick guide will show you just why you should consider going there for your next vacation.
It’s great for kids
When people think of amazing “summer” destinations for families, they tend to think of obvious places like Orlando, Florida. (And, to be fair, Orlando has the unfair advantage of being right next to Disney World.) But Croatia is definitely a destination that shouldn’t be crossed off the list. Croatia has a lot of playgrounds and safe open spaces that are perfect for kids. The beaches are among the finest in the entire world. There are eight national parks that will stun kids, and there are exhilarating festivals available all year round.
Looking for ugly skyscrapers, murky water, a lack of greenery, and littered beaches? Well, you’re not going to find any of that here. There’s a reason that Croatia is used as a filming location for Game of Thrones: it’s an absolutely stunning city, filled with gorgeous classical architecture and shockingly blue water. You might want to check the place out from all available angles, so things like helicopter tours and The Big Sail should be considered. As mentioned, there are also eight national parks here that need to be seen to be believed.
Well, it is the Mediterranean, after all. But you shouldn’t take this to mean that the food here is basically what you can find anywhere in southern and eastern Europe – Croatia has its own delicacies that need to be tried locally. Whether you’re a carnivore or a vegan, there’s plenty of amazing food here. There’s also the wine to consider. There are about 130 indigenous grape varieties in Croatia, making it a perfect place for wine production. There are hundreds of producers making extremely tasty wine all over the place!
It’s stunning whenever you go
A lot of people think of Croatia as a summer destination. The average temperatures during the summer range are in the 20°C to 30°C region, which means it’s not always blistering – it’s perfect for a “hot but not too hot” vacation. There’s also the near-constant sunshine that really brings out Croatia’s beauty. But this doesn’t mean that there’s no reason to visit outside of the June-August season. On the contrary; Croatia in winter is an incredible sight all on its own. Plitvice Lakes National Park in winter has to be seen to be believed. There are also plenty of festivals in which to partake during the Christmas season.
