I love having an excuse to buy the kids something nice. Whether it’s a birthday, Christmas, or a reward for good behaviour, I’m a sucker for a great toy. There are certain types of toys that I’m particularly drawn to. Anything high-tech and gadget-like is pretty appealing to me. I have to remember I’m buying for the kids and not for me sometimes! I’ve been making an effort to look at a wider range of toys this year, so here’s my guide to what’s great in toys:
When I was a kid, I loved riding in my go-kart. Then there was the skateboard and the bike. I love that all these toys are still here for my kids. But my goodness, aren’t they so much better now? There are trikes and toddler motorbikes. Eco toys are often my favourite Christmas presents for kids. There are even sustainable toys like the Wishbone balance bikes to give as I really love those little cars the little ones zoom about in. They were red and yellow when I was a kid too!
Consoles and Games
Now you may think I’m trying to get in on one of my kids presents here. But the consoles are far more useful to the little ones. There are a wealth of educational games out there. I was particularly enthusiastic about the Nintendo Wii with its balance board. The kids can pretend to hula hoop on it. They can even use the Nunchucks to ring handbells in a music game. If they have to move, then I’m happy. I glad some of the other console manufacturers are moving in that direction too.
Kids Tablets, Laptops and Phones
If you go into any baby and toddler store, you will see little versions of almost every gadget you own. I’m particularly impressed with the preschooler versions of the tablet out there. Companies like V-Tech have produced a lot of electronic toys that help teach colours, numbers, and the alphabet. They’re really educational and make a great toy at the same time. I think if you’re going to buy toys for other people’s kids, this could be a much-appreciated gesture.
It’s not often we’re sat in front of the TV, but we do like to have a family movie night once in awhile. There have been some great releases recently too, like the Minions Movie. This kind of movie is a good idea for a gift, especially if you’ve already bought some of the extensive range of merchandise that is out there. TV box sets of kids’ favourites like Thomas The Tank Engine are often very welcome too.
Art and Crafts
Some kids love action, adventure and sports. Others love to sit and create something new. Art set can be a great gift for any child that loves to draw or paint. Different colours and different surfaces to paint on are popular. Paper, card and tissue can offer endless creative opportunities when you’ve got a paint pallet!
I love buying great gifts for the kids, and I love playing with them and their new toys. Perhaps I’ll never grow up in that respect. For me it’s all about the quality time together they afford. Play happy!
