If you’re anything like me, it is at this time of year that you usually start daydreaming about the holidays. The only problem we face now is knowing where to go. What if you are in the mood for something a little different? The good news is: there are plenty of travelling options out there that skirt away from the traditional route. It’s true, there is something for everyone. Here, I’ve put together a list of five alternative ways to travel. Try any one of these out this year, and you will be sure to have a fantastic 2016!
Teaching abroad has become an extremely popular choice for many people over the last decade or so. And it only appears to be getting even more so! That might have something to do with just how easy it is. It all depends on where you travel, of course, but for many places across the globe, you don’t even need any qualifications to teach. The most common choice is to teach English as a second language. In this case, some knowledge of the other language would, of course, be a bonus – but it is absolutely not necessary. Plenty of people teach English all across Asia and even South America without any knowledge of a second language.
Learn to Become an Instructor
If you like the teacher role, but you’re not so keen on the classroom, then this might be your ideal choice. Learning to become a ski instructor is quite possibly one of the most exciting ways to spend your holidays. And there are all sorts of place you can go to do it. For example, there is this snowboard instructor course in Canada. Canada is famous for being a great skiing destination, so you can’t say fairer than that!
Volunteer at a Shelter
Certain countries in Southeast Asia have plenty of animal shelters which desperately need your help. Quite often, these places offer free accommodation and food in exchange for your ongoing help. If you love animals, and you enjoy hot weather and experiencing different cultures, then this is ideal. What better way to spend a summer than caring for kittens and puppies in the day and sunbathing in the afternoon?
Go On Retreat
For those of you with a slightly more spiritual bent, why not consider going on retreat this year? There are countless meditation retreats the world over, so it doesn’t matter where you want to go. There will always be a retreat nearby. For a more authentic experience, you might like to consider India or Nepal, true spiritual homes. But ultimately, the location is irrelevant. What matters is that you put your heart into it and discover a little something about yourself.
Finally, for a unique (and extremely affordable) way to get around any country, think about hitch-hiking. Regardless of where you wish to travel, this can be an exciting way to get around on your travels this year. Just ensure that you are travelling in a group of at least three, and don’t expect to get anywhere very quickly! But if you are in the mood for a slice of real travelling, then this is the way to go.
